The Community Garden

It all starts with an idea

ACAN operates a community garden in the NW section of town between the curling rink and Blue Sky on behalf of the Town of Altona. A Task Force of three or four persons appointed by ACAN is responsible for managing all aspects of the garden. 2023 will be the sixth year that ACAN is involved with this garden.

Main Garden

The main garden is divided into approximately 120 garden plots measuring 15 by 45 feet (5 by 15 meters).

Costs:

  • Full plot: $20,

  • Half plot: $10

  • Additional plot: $10

This price includes access to a wide variety of garden tools and equipment stored in a shed at the garden, as well as access to compost, straw and water.

The garden opens each year on the May Long Weekend. All gardeners must register before that weekend by contacting the garden manager, Jack Heppner, at 204-304-0656 (altonagardening@gmail.com).

The Commons

At the center of the garden is a common area where gardeners can access tools and gardening supplies and meet fellow gardeners. The Commons include two washrooms, a timber frame pavilion, a play area for children and a park-like entrance.
